250 Wisconsin Women Launch Women for Lawton

Martha Love, Nancy Nusbaum & Pat Alea Named Co-Chairs

MADISON – 250 women from across the state of Wisconsin today announced the launch of Women for Lawton, a movement to elect Barbara Lawton Wisconsin’s next governor. Lawton welcomed Milwaukee County Democratic Party Chair Martha Love, former Brown County Executive Nancy Nusbaum and former Wisconsin Women = Prosperity Strategist Pat Alea as the founding co-chairs.

“Women were 58% of the 2008 Wisconsin's primary electorate and 53% of voters in the general election. We can define the outcome in the gubernatorial race,” said Women for Lawton Co-Chair Pat Alea. “Today we start with a strong, core group of 250 women dedicated to electing Barbara Lawton our next governor. As we promote the issues near and dear to our hearts, our numbers will grow virally and we will elect Wisconsin's first woman governor - a strong leader who will fight for the economic security of Wisconsin's families.”

In 2003, Lawton launched Wisconsin Women Equal Prosperity (WW=P) in response to a Women’s Policy Research Institute’s 2002 report that gave Wisconsin an overall grade of C- for the status of women. Lawton earned national and international recognition for her groundbreaking efforts, which a column in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel praised saying the, “ambitious initiative aims to improve the economic status of women in Wisconsin by removing roadblocks.”
